Save the Date!

The MAHSLIN Annual Meeting will be held on Friday April 25 at Mass Medical Society headquarters in Waltham. The general topic this year is Ethics, and not only should you save the date, but also save some questions for our speakers.

Martha Jurchak of Brigham and Women’s will start the day with a discussion of ethics and the ethics consult, followed by Dr. Dan Jones from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who will tell us everything we wanted to know about simulated surgery. Patrick Taylor, an attorney at Children’s Hospital, will finish the morning with a presentation on the ethics of stem cell research. We’ll be conducting the business meeting during lunch, along with the presentation of awards. Scott Lapinski will prevent after-lunch blahs with a talk about the Harvard Medical School institutional repository project, and he will share some tips on how those of us in smaller institutions might create our own.

In addition to the change of timing for the business meeting, there is one other change this year. Due to the popularity of our meeting among vendors, we have added more vendors this year, including NELINET and StatRef. Also, our refreshments and the vendors will be in a separate room, so there should be no confusion in the lobby as there has been in the past.

So plan to join us! There is a registration form at the end of this newsletter, and it will soon be available on the website too.

From the MAHSLIN President

As plans for MAHSLIN’s Annual Meeting are being finalized, the Executive Board thought it was important for everyone to know why we have picked the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) in Waltham as the site for yet another MAHSLIN Annual Meeting.

The Massachusetts Medical Society location has many advantages. The facilities are excellent, the parking is free and plentiful, and the location is convenient to a majority of the membership, with easy access on and off a major highway. If these reasons aren’t enough, the cost per person is very reasonable, the food is plentiful and tasty, and all AV needs are included. All this means MAHSLIN can assemble an impressive list of speakers for a first class program at a reasonable cost.

Finally, over the past few years MAHSLIN has been building a close relationship with the MMS. We have worked with MMS to help gain respect for our profession and it is working. The MMS has asked MAHSLIN librarians to be part of their Technology Day and to serve on the Hospital Library Committee.

So, please join us at for the MAHSLIN Annual Meeting at the Massachusetts Medical Society Headquarters, 860 Winter St., Waltham, MA on April 25, 2008 as we discover a “Brave New World.” Look for more information on the MAHSLIN website soon.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE

MAHSLIN is sponsoring the upcoming MLA webcast:

WEB 2.0 PRINCIPLES & BEST PRACTICES:
DISCOVERING THE PARTICIPATORY WEB

March 5, 2008, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Children's Hospital Boston, Conference Room 3, 1 Autumn Street
3 MLA CE credits

The goal of this program is to provide a basic understanding of web 2.0 terminology and concepts, assess the effect of the technology on health sciences library services, and identify the impact of web 2.0 services on health care today and in the future.

OBJECTIVES:

WRAPAROUND SESSION:

The two-hour web cast will be followed by a wrap-around session featuring Ken Liss, Senior Reference Librarian/Bibliographer, O'Neill Library, Boston College. He will discuss an innovative project at the BC Library which integrates some of these web 2.0 technologies.

Please contact Alison Clapp (Alison.clapp@childrens.harvard.edu) to register.

MAHSLIN is a co-sponsor with a number of other library groups of the following program. Please note that as of February 1st, there were only one or two spots available at the Worcester location.

LICENSING ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
March 3, 2008, 8:30 – 5:00 (Holy Cross, Worcester)
March 4, 2008, 8:30 – 5:00 (Dartmouth College, NH)
8 MLA credits

Instructors: Laurie Thompson, Director; UT Southwestern Medical Library(Dallas, TX) and Harry Youtt, Attorney; Los Angeles, CA

In the good old days, all we had to master was the Copyright Law and Fair Use. We would acquire a book or a journal, post and monitor a "fair-use" photocopy policy, and go on about our activities. Now, instead of receiving print materials, we become connected with online resources. With each new digital information product, there arrives a separate license. Each contains its own private "copyright" terms imposed by contract. This course provides an introduction to license provisions and terminology, comparing the license and copyright, and managing the licensing process. Through lecture, instructor debate and student participation, you will learn strategies for developing a license management model, including building a team for license evaluations and negotiation; conduct a clause-by-clause analysis of an existing license agreement; develop negotiating strategies; and discuss techniques for building a productive relationship with the legal department.

To inquire about registering, please email: licensingelectronicresources@gmail.com

We have enjoyed our tenure chairing the Education Committee together these past four years, and the end of the 2008 Annual Meeting in April will mark the end of our term. We know that there are MAHSLIN members who are equally committed to education and hope that you will step forward. Having co-chairs worked well for us as the work could be easily divided. Naturally, we will be more than happy to offer whatever support and assistance we can. Please let Nathan, Alison or Chris Fleuriel (incoming president) know if you would like to be involved with the Education Committee.

RUMINATIONS ON THE AWARDS SEASON

This is the season of awards in Hollywood. First the Golden Globes, then the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards, then at the end of February, the Holy Grail of Hollywood, the Academy Awards. We celebrate Oscar Night every year in my house. We create a menu with each dish relating in some way (obvious or obscure) to one of the five Best Picture nominees. Last year’s menu included, for The Queen, tea and crumpets. For Crash, we had black and white cookies. Sometimes the menu needs explaining, but you get the idea. We also try to predict the winners. The person with the most correct guesses wins bragging rights for a year. One of my favorite Oscar Nights was when the electricity went out for about a half hour and we sat in candlelight talking about our favorite movies. Great fun, every year.

Then March comes (in like a lion) and the post-awards-show letdown begins. What to do, what to do… Well, this year, as MAHSLIN’s past-president, I am privileged to be the person on the Executive Board who gets to solicit nominations for our two annual MAHSLIN awards. Not the Academy Awards, but the winners do get to make a nifty little speech in front of the assembled membership at our Annual Meeting. If you want, you can even wear a sequined gown or a tux! What better way to pull yourself out of the post-Oscar doldrums than to make a nomination and await the big MAHSLIN awards ceremony at the end of April (Friday, April 25th, to be exact).

This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize a colleague for his/her contributions to our state organization and/or our profession. Last year’s recipients were Lucretia McClure and Lyn Dietrich (Hall of Fame), and Nathan Norris and Alison Clapp (Professional Award). Nominations are submitted to the MAHSLIN Executive Board for a vote in March; awards are presented at the MAHSLIN Annual Meeting.

Below are the details of each award.

Hall of Fame Award:

Award: Certificate awarded at the Annual Meeting, name added to the MAHSLIN Hall of Fame plaque, lifetime membership in MAHSLIN.

Purpose: To recognize an outstanding member of MAHSLIN for a long, distinguished career in medical/health science librarianship.

Criteria:

  • Membership Requirement: MAHSLIN member in good standing
  • Where in Career: At or near the end of an active professional career
  • Specific Focus: Contribution to the association
  • Special Consideration: Prolonged distinguished service to MAHSLIN
  • Paul Vaiginas Professional Award:

(Note: This award is named for the late Paul Vaiginas, Medical Librarian at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who was a founding member of MAHSLIN.)

Award: Certificate and $150 scholarship for continuing education, awarded at the Annual Meeting

Purpose: Presented to an individual member for outstanding contribution(s) to the profession and/or MAHSLIN.

    Criteria:

  • Membership Requirement: MAHSLIN member in good standing
  • Where in Career: N/A
  • Specific Focus:
  • Special Consideration: Prolonged distinguished service to MAHSLIN.

Nominations for both awards are open through March 15, 2008. To nominate someone, please send an email to me (mcoletti@bidmc.harvard.edu) with a brief explanation as to why the person you are nominating is deserving of an award (please specify which award).

Think hard, be generous, and nominate me! Just kidding; my sequined dress is out on loan to Cate Blanchett. Nominate a colleague who has done something great for us, for you, for MAHSLIN, for the profession.

    NLM Disaster Planning

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine – New England Region presented an all day workshop, “A Matter of When, Not If: Preventing and Preparing for Library Disasters” on November 16, 2007 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Shrewsbury.

A small group of librarians, including two from a private library in New York, listened attentively as Lori Foley, Director of Field Service for the Northeast Document Conservation Center spoke in a lively, entertaining and informative style. Her presentations were full of facts, suggestions and information as well as pictures of actual disasters. We even had a disaster preparedness case study that tested just how well we listened and understood her presentation.

After a brief overview and definition, we learned how to identify hazards, assess risks and implement appropriate measures for damage by water, fire, mold and pests. We learned the basics of the planning process including how to write a disaster plan, how to set goals, who to involve, etc. Ms. Foley stressed that a good disaster plan should be clear, concise, well-organized, relevant and practical. It should be tailored to the institution’s geography, users and priorities, be widely distributed and read and reviewed and updated annually.

She left us with the following websites for further information and help in developing a disaster plan:
