BOSTON LIBRARIAN GIVES WHOLE NEW MEANING TO JOB-RELATED HEADACHES

Margo Coletti, director of medical libraries at Beth Israel Deaconess Center in Boston, is facilitating a new support group at BIDMC for headache sufferers. The support group, the first of its kind in the Boston area, is sponsored by the National Headache Foundation (NHF) and is open to the public. Meetings are held the last Wednesday evening of each month in the BIDMC Learning Center Library which provides a relaxing and informative atmosphere. The group plans to focus on a different topic each month; the September 27th meeting focused on headaches in the workplace.

The group came about when a physician with NHF ties approached Coletti to inquire about organizations that might be willing to form and facilitate such a meeting. Feeling that her librarian's background in medical literature could offer a unique opportunity to share in such a group, Coletti approached the Learning Center for space, advice, and assistance, and initiated the program.

If you would like more information about this support group, or help in setting up one in your own institution, contact Margo (mailto:mcoletti@caregroup.harvard.edu).

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF MEDICAL LIBRARIANS IN MASSACHUSETTS

This committee first met on July 25, 2000, to discuss ideas on how to make the public and medical community more aware of the services and expertise of medical librarians. Several possible methods are in their embryonic stages, including physician/patient brochures, mass media exposure, and "Library Grand Rounds" modules. Members of the committee are: Anita Loscalzo, Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, Chair; Sidney Fingold, NE Regional Primate Center; Elizabeth Fitzpayne, Mass. Medical Society; and Peg Spinner, UMass Medical School.

The MAHSLIN Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Medical Librarians in

Mass. is working on a generic brochure very tentatively titled "Ask a

Medical Librarian." We would like to see what all of you have already

done for your individual libraries. Please send a copy or actual

brochure to:

Thank you for your assistance.
